Providing an amazing Dad with free medical flights for cancer treatment

The diagnosis of a rare bone disease leads to a rare level of generosity and support.

Nicolas has always been a hard worker. The owner of a food service business he was used to long hours and long days. with no complaint. Then he started feeling worn down, tired with more than normal aches and pains.

Initially it was just attributed to age and all those years of hard work. But there was something more serious going on.

Turned out after multiple tests that Nicolas had Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and would require he travel to Boston from his home in Pennsylvania for multiple medical treatments.
“I don’t know if it was doable. To go back seven or eight hours drive. I couldn’t fly commercial, I couldn’t take the train, because of my immune system. But PALS just – boom- saved my life!”

When Nicolas discovered PALS, it was literally a life-saver. Many people may not realize but when you are transported for medical care with PALS, you are traveling from a usually local, regional airport, not the big commercial airports most of us are used to. This is very important for people like Nicolas who are immunocompromised and can’t risk exposure to large crowds and long waits.

The experience was not only life-changing for Nicolas but for his wife and kids. His kids had the opportunity to see the plane their dad was traveling to medical care on, but his wife was able to take a compassion flight to see Nicolas at a point when his health situation was in question.

Providing compassion flights (as they are called) is just another way PALS strives to help people receive the medical care and relive the burden of medical travel.

“PALS is full of greatness!”

Our Story

PALS began its mission to provide free medical, compassion and veteran flights back in 2010. It was the dream of our founders, who as pilots felt their skills and resources could help people with free air transportation for medical treatments.

That initial inspiration and the first PALS flight has now grown to over 27,000 flights for over 3,200 families and an astounding 6.5 million miles flown. Quite an accomplishment for a free air travel organization a little over 10 years old.

Our Passenger Stories

Over the years and over many missions, we’re honored and humbled to hear how many lives we’ve been able to impact. Often times when a person is diagnosed with a life-changing illness, the care they need is inaccessible by car due to the repeat trips and length of each trip. When these families and individuals reach out to PALS, our team of volunteer pilots and mission coordinators go to work to make free travel to a medical facility or hospital possible. The stories we hear and those that our patients send us are all the reward we need.

Let’s make more critical medical flights and compassion flights happen! We cannot do it without you.
