Friendly Mission Coordination Reminders~and an offer for free lunch!~

  • While you receive the available missions list via email twice weekly, the mission coordinators are always moving and shaking at the PALS office – this means that mission details often change due to appointment changes, patients’ medical conditions, etc.  In addition to reviewing the Missions Available email, please consider logging into VPOIDS regularly to view the most up-to-date listing of missions.
    • Unsure of your login details for the missions system?  Contact Jen Hotsko for assistance in logging in!
  • Airports and other mission details are often flexible – if you see a mission that would be perfect “if only…”, contact Mission Coordination to see if a few simple tweaks can be made to make it the mission of your dreams!
  • Speaking of alternate airports – PALS Board Member, Volunteer Pilot, and Pilot TasosEuroCafe 2Committee Member, Mark Hanson has made a very generous offer for any PALS Pilot fying a PALS mission into KOWD (Norwood).  A copy of your PALS mission itinerary and PALS member ID badge will get you a FREE lunch at Taso’s (up to $20 including tip)!  Ask for Christine.  Thank you Mark!

We Are Here For YOU!
PALS would not be where we are today without the support of our members, and we cannot thank you enough for all that you have done.  We can, however, work hard to make this the most enjoyable volunteer experience you’ve ever had…we just need a little more help from you in order to make that possible.

pilot ambassador

Would you like to be a PALS Pilot Ambassador?

Fly-in and aviation event season is upon us! While we would love to attend every event that is happening within our coverage area, it just isn’t possible due to geographic constraints and availability of staff members.  We would like to develop a group of PALS Pilot Ambassadors to help us get more “feet on the street”.  Would you be interested in toting some PALS brochures, a few talking points, sporting some PALS gear, and helping to spread the word about PALS to pilots that might be interested in signing up to help patients access the medical treatment they need?

Getting started is easy – just contact our Pilot Coordinator, Jen Hotsko by email (jen.hotsko@palservices.org) or phone (516-640-7200) for details!

Additionally, we are looking to add more events to our calendar of aviation-related outreach activities. Is there an event that you think we should try to attend?  Perhaps it is an annual convention specific to make/model, a long running fly-in breakfast that typically attracts a big crowd, or some other event that you’ve enjoyed.  Send  Jen Hotsko the details and we’ll see if we can be there!

Are you going to Sun n’ Fun 2015?

pals gear 2 2If you are heading to Sun n’ Fun in the Spring, don’t forget to pack a PALS Shirt and Hat!  PALS will not have a booth at Sun n’ Fun this year, but we hope that we can count on you to help spread the word about your experiences as a PALS Pilot!  Wearing PALS gear at an aviation event as large and well attended as Sun n’ Fun, can easily lead to conversations with fellow pilots that might be interested in becoming more involved with PALS!

If you would like some extra brochures or need a PALS shirt to pack for your trip, contact Pilot Coordinator, Jen Hotsko, at least 5-7 business days before your planned departure to allow time for shipping.  Safe travels!

2014 Was a GREAT Year, Thanks to You!
  • 2,343 PALS missions were coordinated in 2014
  • We surpassed 6,700 missions coordinated since our inception in 2010
  • We welcomed 134 new volunteer pilots
  • And, most importantly, we changed countless lives…one flight at a time!
None of this could have been possible without the unwavering support of all of you!  We cannot thank you enough and look forward to working with you to accomplish even greater things in 2015.

If you weren't able to make many (or any) PALS flights last year, maybe 2015 will be your year!  Please check our available missions list often at https://afids.palservices.org, and remember that we often have some flexibility to flights – using an alternate airport, flexible departure times, etc – just contact our Mission Coordination team at 631-694-7257 to discuss alternatives.  For example, at times, we can ask if a companion is a necessity, therefore reducing the weight of the flight – don't be afraid to think creatively.

As for weather, of course it is a very real concern that weather may interfere with a scheduled mission, for that reason, all of our passengers are told to have a strong back-up plan in the event their flight needs to be canceled – so don't hold back because it's winter and there might be icing two weeks from now, you just might luck out with blue skies and clear runways!

PALS Calendar of Events

For the most up-to-date listing of events, don't forget to visit our online Calendar of Events.  Our calendar can be found under the "For Pilots" section of our website, by clicking on "Pilot Calendar" or by following this link.

The calendar is color-coded by event type, each listing can be clicked to reveal more details.  As we confirm our attendance at outreach events this year, they'll be added to our online calendar – check back often to see where you can meet up with us!

1-Screen Shot 2015-01-23 at 3.44.03 PM copy

If you have any questions or suggested events, please contact Pilot Coordinator, Jen Hotsko.

When Can We See You?

Last year PALS was able to attend several of AOPA's regional fly-in events.  We got to spend some quality face time with some of you, and were able to meet so many new pilots and members of the greater aviation community.  We will be returning to AOPA's Homecoming Event in Frederick, MD (FDK) on Saturday, June 6th, and hope to see some of you there.

As we work to finalize our Spring/Summer calendar of aviation-related outreach activities, we are looking for your insight.  Is there an event that you think we should try to attend?  Perhaps it is an annual convention specific to make/model, a long running fly-in breakfast that typically attracts a big crowd, or some other event that you've enjoyed.  Please contact Pilot Coordinator, Jen Hotsko with details and we'll see if we can be in attendance!

And even better, if you're planning to attend an event and would like to represent PALS, let us know and we'll send you outreach material so that you can serve as our ambassador!

Command Pilot/Mission Assistant features in VPOIDS

Did you know that VPOIDS now has a feature for Command Pilots to connect with Mission Assistants in a more efficient manner?

For Command Pilots:
When requesting a mission in VPOIDS, you will be asked if you would like a Mission Assistant.  Please consider selecting YES whenever flight logistics and weight and balance will allow.  We have a hearty pool of Mission Assistants working towards the minimum requirements to serve as PALS Command Pilots – these individuals are often looking for opportunities to assist with missions, and a second set of eyes and ears in the cockpit can be helpful on mission day!

For Mission Assistants:
To view opportunities to serve as Mission Assistant, click on the PENDING Missions tab, check off the "Mission Assistant" box and click "Find".  The displayed missions will show the Command Pilot's home airport and best contact number. If the timing of the flight will work for you, you can connect with the Command Pilot directly!

For more detailed instructions, check out this link to our introduction of the new features from an earlier announcement.

If you have any questions, please contact Pilot Coordinator, Jen Hotsko.

Friendly Mission Reminders

  • Please remember to submit Post Mission Reports within 24-48 hours of completing your mission.
  • When submitting your mission paperwork on the day of your flight, please be sure that all documents contain the following items:
    • Passenger Last Name
    • Mission Number
    • Mission Date
  • If you are using an app to complete your paperwork electronically, please note that our Mission Document Kit has been updated to include our new pilot affirmation.  Please replace your previously saved document with the new forms!
  • If you are not using an app to complete and submit your mission documents using your tablet, consider these apps:
  • DON'T FORGET: All mission paperwork should be submitted by fax (631-755-2184), email (palsmail@palservices.org), or mail (120 Adams Blvd, Farmingdale, NY 11735) BEFORE you take off with your passengers!

FltPlan.Com Integration with VPOIDS

Do you make a lot of personal or business flights throughout the week but find it tedious to sift through our list of available missions to find a mission that might be in line with your travel plans?   We have a solution!

Our online missions system, VPOIDS, is now integrated with FltPlan.com so that you can share your flight plans, filed through FltPlan.com with PALS.  This will let our Mission Coordination Team know about flights you are already planning so that we can suggest upcoming missions that might match up with your planned route.  If there is an opportunity for your flight to be paired with an open mission, our coordinators will let you know.

The process is simple.  You can either email your FltPlan.com username to Jen Hotsko to include in your member profile, OR you can follow the steps below to add your username through your Account Settings in VPOIDS:

                Account Settings copy 2

  • Edit Pilot Information from the left column

            Edit Pilot Info copy

  • Enter your FltPlan.com Username into the appropriate field (at the bottom of the screen)

            FltPlan.com Username copy

  • Save Changes

Please note that this is a brand new feature to us.  Thank you for your patience and understanding as we all get used to using it!

Not a FltPlan.com user?  No worries!  We're also working to replicate this feature with other flight planning sites.  Stay tuned for updates.

Are you going to Sun n' Fun 2015?

PALS Gear - OSHKOSHIf you are heading to Sun n' Fun in the Spring, don't forget to pack a PALS Shirt and Hat!  PALS will not have a booth at Sun n' Fun this year, but we hope that we can count on you to help spread the word about your experiences as a PALS Pilot!  Wearing PALS gear at an aviation event as large and well attended as Sun n' Fun, can easily lead to conversations with fellow pilots that might be interested in becoming more involved with PALS!

If you would like some extra brochures or need a PALS shirt to pack for your trip, contact Pilot Coordinator, Jen Hotsko, at least 5-7 business days before your planned departure to allow time for shipping.  Safe travels!

Soarin' Soiree 2014

Our 2nd Annual Soarin' Soiree was held on November 7th at the Greenwich Country Club.  At this year's event, we took the time to recognize two very special PALS pilots.

Dennis photo copyDennis Coulombe, Falmouth, ME
Dennis was celebrated for completing his 100th PALS mission as Command Pilot. Dennis is a huge asset to PALS and a lifeline to the people of Maine.  We are in awe of his compassion and generosity and consider him to be a valuable part of the PALS team.

Larry Photo 2Larry Labriola, Scarsdale, NY
Larry Labriola, of Scarsdale, New York, has flown over 55 flights for PALS, including 10 year old Iraqi-born Noora from Maine to NY.  Noora was returning home after years of recovery from being shot in the head by a sniper's bullet.  Larry and his big smile can brighten anyone's day – he is always a pleasure to work with!

Tower Closures

ATC tower 2In early March the FAA announced that air traffic control towers at many smaller airports may be closed as a result of sequestration.  Recently that news was followed with a listing and timeline of ATC towers that would be furloughed.

According to recent news reports, the FAA has since delayed all closures until at least June 15, 2013.
While we wait to learn the fate of smaller, tower controlled airports, check out AOPA’s website for the latest updates and information about how to be prepared for tower closures in your area, like the article Tower’s closed. What now?

PALS Petition to the FAA for use of donated aircraft

The proposed exemption, if granted, would have permitted PALS, a not-for-profit volunteer pilot organization, to use a donated aircraft for transporting patients and staff to appointments or meetings by PALS staff members and volunteer pilots without having to meet the requirements of part 119 and part 135.
The FAA reviewed this request and found that “a grant of exemption would not be in the public interest and would not provide an equivalent level of safety as that provided by the current regulations.”
The denial went on to say, “The humanitarian efforts of many individuals in the aviation community are laudable, yet the need to maintain the highest level of safety for commercial operations remains. Accordingly, the FAA believes that the interests of safety are best served by requiring operations conducted for compensation or hire to be conducted under parts 121 or 135.5”
If you would like to see the full denial, please contact our office and request a copy to be emailed to you.
